Relentless Pursuit with Joe Adams

Jason and Mindy Hoover Episode 19

Joe Adams, founder of “Relentless Pursuit,” joined us to share the gripping story behind his mission. After surviving a near-fatal motorcycle accident that left him with multiple fractures and internal injuries, Joe discovered that gratitude, determination, and faith could transform even the darkest of circumstances. Despite the pain and uncertainty of his recovery, he focused on seeing each moment—good or bad—as an opportunity for growth. His unwavering belief that this life-altering event was meant to shape his future laid the groundwork for the powerful message he spreads through his brand and his podcast.

Joe also spoke of the passion that drives him to help others. Whether he’s hosting fundraisers, offering community support during natural disasters, or collaborating with local organizations, Joe continuously looks for ways to uplift people. Through his experiences, he learned that everyone’s journey matters and it’s often our toughest struggles that reveal our greatest strengths. Ultimately, Joe’s story stands as a testament to the power of resilience, intentional living, and a heart that’s committed to making a difference.

Takeaways:

  • Choose Gratitude First: Joe’s immediate shift to gratitude—even amid serious injuries—highlights how powerful it is to look for the good, no matter the circumstance.
  • Embrace Adversity as Fuel: Resilience comes from confronting hardships head-on; each challenge strengthens our resolve and shapes our character.
  • Live with Intention: Putting purpose behind our daily actions helps us stay on track, remain motivated, and turn dreams into realities.
  • Transform Through the Journey: The greatest lessons often come from our toughest moments. We can transform our lives if we remain open to growth.
  • Community Impact Matters: Whether he’s hosting Key Lime Pie charity events or helping flood victims, Joe shows that a single person’s dedication can spark broader community support.

Well, we're so excited to hear about Relentless Pursuit. So I would love for you to take us back and kind of hear about your origin. What was your defining moment on what had you go down this path?

Oh man, she's a crazy story buckle, you know, in. first of all, again, thank you for having me guys. I'm stoked to be a part of this and I love what y'all are doing. I love the name of the podcast, obviously. Yes, yes. I definitely want to talk about that too. Yeah, because I mean, people, people matter. We all matter. And we need to be heard and connect that way. So I appreciate this. So, and you guys, I mean, we'd spoke before y'all are great.

better.

Speaker 1 (02:07.938)
Glad to be able to support y'all as well. Well, thank you. But let's rewind, you know, I think I'll kind of start it like the shift of everything. I kind of started beginning of like my journey because it's all kind of embodies it. And I'll probably speed through like the first little bit into like my accident, which is the big significant change. But, you know, great childhood, so on so forth. Love my parents, my family, everything. And

But after after high school, I went to college, didn't go so well for me. Real quick, got consumed by addiction. So I was big into pills and I just went down that road. And I think it was just a way I didn't know what I wanted out of life. And so it was a way for me just to escape the thought process behind that. I don't have to think about it. So if I just take this all the time, I can just tune it all out.

Obviously fast forward through that year of college, I realized I was kind of going downhill. And so I had kind of a reflective moment in the mirror in the dorms. I just looked like crap. I felt like crap. And I remember telling that person in mirror, I was like, I hate you. And now when you hear this, you may think the hatred thing is negative, but I realized that that moment or reflecting on it, that that moment of self-hate was the biggest moment of self-love I've ever shown myself.

because I walked away from that person that wasn't me. And I think it's always important to stress that because sometimes we look in the reflection that that doesn't have to be who we are. We can be someone different from that moment on. Do you ever feel like that was just a completely different lifetime? yeah. But I know it was a very essential because it showed me, guess, I think reflecting on it now, I can look back and be like,

find appreciation in that, like no matter where I'm at in my life or where I'm at in my journey, like all it takes is the choice to change the trajectory moving forward. You just got to tell yourself I'm changing today. I'm going to be better today. It just takes that one moment, you know, and those so that that part of my life, I'm glad I went through it and it taught me a less a huge lesson, but now I can apply that to every other aspect of my life moving forward in some way or whatever I go through. So.

Speaker 1 (04:35.918)
Yeah. So the, the journey through that and I'm just taking the notes here, uh, because it definitely resonates with me. And I know a lot of people it's that journey is dark and for the most part of it, you don't see a, you know, that light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. And it could be very, very daunting. And when it gets that dark, that's when it gets scary. And so it seems like, you,

You experienced that. can you share about the, wreck that kind of happened? Yeah. So fast forward, you know, got, I immediately, I hit up my best friend. I was like, dude, I'm going to recruit her. we joined the military together. Um, I did. Yeah. Air force. So yeah, I went to F-22. Oh, really? Yeah. Yeah. I did that for six years. I loaded bombs on a F-22s and that was a good time, you know, and, um, that changed everything too. I needed that.

point in my life. Was it the structure or the accountability? I think a blend of both. think I just needed a purpose bigger than myself too. I think I just didn't have a purpose or didn't know what it was. It wasn't necessarily my whole purpose, but it gave me purpose to serve something more than myself. so that was, yeah. And then just having the structure and the accountability, I think that all applied.

came together full circle, so it was very important. But I got out after six years and wanted to go my own journey. even then it was kind of crazy. Got out of the military trying to adjust, traveled the world for a little bit at one point, and then came back here to Middle Tennessee and then started school full time at MTSU. And so I was working on that.

And then just fast forward a couple more years, because the time I got in military was basically the beginning of 2016. So fast forward to through all that, the traveling, all the things. Then 2018 was like the biggest shift in my life. So.

Speaker 1 (06:49.345)
October.

October 10th, 2018. Yeah, I leaving my leaving class. I was in Murfreesboro at MTSU and that morning I loaded up on my Harley and I lived in Hermitage at the time and I never forget I posted an Instagram like boomerang of my bike because it was like 40 degrees out and I was like, this is a bad idea that morning, you know, and I wasn't talking about riding the bike. I think just the cold that aspect. So that morning I did that and I took off on my bike headed to Murfreesboro.

And we got out class early that day. And so I was just kind of cruising around Murfreesboro. I was off of a little road called Kason Lane. There's an elementary school right there at this intersection. And so I was cruising around, it's a beautiful day. probably 11, 30 in the afternoon. In the morning, I'm cruising around town and I come up on this light, right? And I got these big ape hangers on the bike, you my arms are way up here.

actually go on the speed limit, believe it or not, which is I didn't do often, but I did that day. And I get to this intersection. I looked to my left and I see a car probably 20, 30 feet away. And, and obviously some choice words went off in my head at that moment. I just, like, and I looked and my brain just shut off. And then what had happened was the

I was coming through this way, the car came to my left and we hit corner to corner. I fishtailed into the side of this car, flopped over into the windshield and then got launched 90 feet through the air. yeah. I was really concerned whether or not I have like the flight record in town, but that's just like a personal thing. was like, that's probably pretty close. but you know, so yeah, that's what, that's what happened. I woke up in a field and I was laying there on my back.

Speaker 1 (08:48.214)
and lifted my head up and I saw my left femur sticking out of my leg and I was like, dang. It's not good. This is not good. But the thing is, that it didn't feel real. It was like I was in a dream. Like none of it felt like it was reality. It was just like some crazy dream I was in.

Not good.

Speaker 2 (09:05.358)
think it's like God's way of protecting us, you know, our mind and our sanity.

Yeah, and obviously the adrenaline and stuff, it kind of like numbs you in a way. You're so just pumping, firing on all cylinders. Your nervous system's just going crazy. And it just, I think, yeah, it's like a protection. It's just, yeah, you just keep from... Because like the fact that my brain shut off before I even got hit, like I don't even remember the impact. Like that's a blessing in itself. because I remember just seeing it and like my body did the work for me. It was like, you're going down, bro. Like let's shut off right now.

So, yeah, I up. What was that? said, that's something, my, reminds me of my mom a long time ago, way before I was born. I just real quick, she had a similar instance. She, was in a car right, wasn't a motorcycle, but she talks about, like she said, the way she can put it is that like an angel, the hands just kept her head straight. Even though she knew this diesel was coming and it just protected her.

that whole wreck, was, you the whole car was totaled and she can imagine it was a Lincoln Continental. Those were like land yachts back then. They, was, you had to some damage to total a car back then. so it was very similar. like she didn't get, know, the, guess the adrenaline and then the protection. So anyway, that was something is, mean, yeah, this is wild to reflect on those things. Damn. Like the chances, right? Cause I,

Good tank.

Speaker 1 (10:37.836)
Obviously since then I hear about motorcycles and you know, they don't acquire and I'll get to the list. They don't acquire like they maybe get one of my injuries and they didn't make it, you know, and I'm like, dude, right. And I'll go through my launcher list of stuff, but it's just wild to, to reflect on that. And you know, I'm beyond grateful, but, so yeah, like I'm laying here in this field, see my femur sticking out and I just laid back and this cop comes up. He's like, sir, you've been in bad accident. I'm like, yeah.

Thanks. Really? And, uh, he's asking me all kinds of questions. He asked me for phone numbers and I've never like remembered phone numbers anyways. So I'm like, man, I don't know. Like my phone's bent and I was able to give him some information. I was able to talk. It's all going crazy. And then he's like, Hey, I called your life flight there on the way. I'm like, all right. And, um, life flight arrives. They load me up on a stretcher I'm like, am I going to die or something like that?

Like,

I'm like, I feel fine. I just know my bones broken. And they're like, so we're gonna try to keep that from happening. And then it's just, I don't know, you ever have those situations in your life, like maybe something bad happens, or you get some bad news, and you just get that chill that just kind of starts, that sensation that goes from your head to your toes. I just felt that. And I was just like, holy, this is real. Excuse my language, by the way, I try not to... I mean, it's pretty tragic.

And they're good.

Speaker 1 (12:05.902)
Yeah. And it was just, it was so real in that moment. And I was like, so they let me up in the stretcher and I just started thinking about like my family and stuff like that. Like my niece and my parents and so on. And I'm just like, Joe, like you can't go like this. Isn't it? This isn't it. And it's just crazy. Cause I remember just, wasn't trying to cast the views. just like immediately I got, I remember getting the helicopter looking around and then I just closed my eyes and I was like, stay focused, stay focused. And then I had like this vision, which is pretty crazy at this fire.

It was a very spiritual thing to me. And immediately after that, I woke up in the hospital.

Speaker 1 (12:45.1)
Of course, know, all the people are coming in. I've got people visiting. Like it's all kind of a blur because they've got me hooked up to it. The lot at Ivy and I'm just like, you know, just keep it pumping. You know, I wasn't even waiting for the light. It was just like, well, it's whatever, whatever comes on at the morphing.

the limit and they'll get you maxed out.

Yeah, exactly. Well, then you feel like you realize, you know, because at that point, like, okay, I'm feeling how jacked up I am like, this is not comfortable. So you just kind of want to numb it as much as you can. But that's, you know, that's impossible. And then you got all the doctors and people coming in, and everyone in there, like you should be dead. I'm like, dang, that's pretty crazy to hear. Well, come to find out, I started learning what my injuries were. And so I'd had a traumatic brain injury. had

an aortic aneurysm, which was the biggest thing. And that was bleeding into my right lung, which was also collapsed. my goodness. I had six or seven, six or seven organ lacerations. So there was a lot of internal bleeding there. I three ribs, broke my hip in three places. My left femur came out, my right knee, my tibia, fibula, both ankles, both feet, all my toes crushed.

And then I got stabbed by something in my groin that I lost a few pints of blood out of. So. Insult injury for sure. Yeah. So when I took this out, I had people hit me up like, this even real? They're just so blown away. And these are dudes that have been blown up overseas and stuff. They're like, dude, what the heck?

Speaker 2 (14:15.776)
You're like I survived the military to come home and have a wreck. What?

which is like the craziest and the craziest circumstance. And, know, I always understood the risk, but I guess I never expected something. So I always had kind of this expectation, like I'm gonna go down. Like you just hear that about riding motorcycles, but I never expected to be like in that level. And so, but one thing that was the biggest blessing, I think of all is that it was like, I this immediate recognition of like, this was meant to be. Really? This was.

Yeah, and I've talked about this analogy recently, like a lot of people have potential. Everybody has potential the whole world, everybody in the world does. And unfortunately, a lot of people, maybe I think comfort keeps you from figuring that out. And so we go through my go through life without finding that key. And there's a there's a show called lock and key. It's like a family. There's all these whispering keys. So I love I thought about this analogy last night, because I'm like,

Love that series.

Speaker 1 (15:18.06)
my mom, she'll tell you, she's like, no, you weren't meant to go through that. didn't. That was always in you. And it's like, yes, it was. Everybody has something in them. But that was the key. And so I took that key and I'll unlock something totally different. It gave me purpose. It gave me fire. And then now moving throughout life, I'm just kind of like, let's, you know, I walk around the house and I hear a whisper and I'm like, like, this may be kind of weird to go after, but I'm going to find this key and unlock this other one, you know? And that's just kind of like how I don't have to visualize things. love, you know,

when you can paint a picture with stuff. So I'm curious if you don't mind, mentioned that you had a vision of fire. Was that during the hospital or during That was on the life flight. That was during the life flight, okay.

So you were, were you conscious during the flight? or in and out, maybe I think maybe in and out. think they were trying to keep me like down or what? I don't know if they had like put me on anything or reject me with anything, but I just know like, as I was thinking about my family, I was just like, you got to make it like you got this Joe, you got this. I was just talking to myself, like keep going, keep going. And, and I was just, yeah, just really thinking about family. And then that vision happened.

And then then I woke up in the hospital. It was like after that, like I'd saw the embers at this fire and I was the only one there. And then I just saw it explode. Like the fire just goes, and then I woke up. wow. And it is very connected with my spiritual path. And so it was very, to me, was as very, it's extremely spiritual. Like it was all spiritual, right?

And I think moments like these happen because no matter what path we're on or whatever our faith is, think those kinds of things are like clearly, you know, signs, right? And so it was a very powerful moment to me and I was like, Oh, this was, I think that was kind of like what cleared it too. It was like, this was meant to be like, this is my test.

Speaker 2 (17:20.462)
I'm listening. I'm listening.

Exactly. I woke up like with that fire in essence. Yeah. yeah. Yeah. And because immediately I was like, dude, I don't feel nobody feels sorry for me. Like, I'm grateful for this. Like this was laid out in front of me for a reason. I don't know why, but it's part of my journey.

But you had to choose that mindset. Even at that defining moment, you could have gone the other way and went into pity party mode and just poor me. But instead, you saw this as this is my defining moment to make a huge change in my life and to go a different

Yeah, without a doubt. I think, you know, and had I gone into like a bad place, I think maybe rightfully so. I think, you know, lot of people go through these things and I'm just fortunate there's a book and they have like a rule and I forget the name. I got the book here somewhere, but it talks about that. Like a lot of people go through these things. There's like 70 or 80 % actually go in that dark place and then like the vast, you know, minority of them actually use it.

and find the purpose in it, right? So I guess I'm also very glad to be a part of that percentage. Because yeah, I could have gone to a bad place and I don't think anybody would have like knocked me for it. Like you got jacked up like, you know, get it. Yeah, but and don't get me wrong, there were some parts, some parts of it that were hard, you know, I able to walk for several, you know, a few months and you know, I was a bed rest and so I had to like occupy myself in ways that just kept me focused.

Speaker 2 (18:39.672)
For a while, yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:56.686)
Right? So, you know, when you're depending on your family to wipe you and you're like a grown man, you know, like that's a humbling part. Like I just remember being in tears. Like my mom's helping me on my side. My dad's or my dad's holding me on my side. My mom's wiping me and I'm just like bawling my eyes out. I'm like, God, this sucks. Like because it's, but it's very humbling and it also, but it also gives you to that place of gratitude, you know, that we tend to like forget. So.

think all, yeah, all of it was necessary. You know, it's just a, yeah, highlight of my life, I'd say. And, you know, a lot of times people have these major life moments and, you know, you, like Mindy was saying, you have that option to choose which way to take it. and well, first, we're so glad that you're here with us and

You are taking that and making a positive out of it, not only for yourself, but for others. So after you're recuperating, do you recall when it started, you started getting inspired about that next step? Yeah. So I, you know, I was in school, like I said, I was actually wanted to work towards like physical therapy and, know, in all honesty, I think, like, I think that's a great career field.

I don't know that just seemed like the best idea. Like I was in exercise science, like I'm good at that stuff. It gives me an opportunity to help people. So that was my goal. I was like, well, I'm gonna set it up and I worked towards that and see what directions I can go on my own from there. But I always had something in me that wanted to just do my thing. I just didn't know what it was. Well, this accident gave me the opportunity to do my thing my way. And so

started, but I started sharing, you know, my recovery and just like my gratitude for people. I had so many people come together for like raising money for me. Like, I'm in like the romance novel world. I'm a model for book not covers. So I'm not like a bunch of books, but that world, I know, it's just like a thing. But that community came together and like in a week, they raised like 40 grand for me, you and I so inspired and blown away like, my god, like that love, you know, like y'all really don't know me.

Speaker 1 (21:14.008)
But they love y'all. Y'all came together as a community and like supported me and some so many other people. And it was just like I was floored. I was like, man, I love people. Yeah. And so moving forward, I was just so blown away by that. And it just I was getting messages constantly. I mean, it's funny because I went through my phone. And, you know, if anybody out there looks like they watch this.

message me like October 2018. Sorry, I respond. I was getting a lot of stuff because I was like, dang, I didn't respond to this person. That was like a really nice message. I'm sure I guess I'm going to say thank you. But, but anyways, and I was just super inspired by that. think what I found inspiration is, is just like, that's what fired me up was the people coming together. And I was like, well, now I have to use this, right? Now I have to use this and create something from it to

inspire others and make an impact and, and maybe help them stoke that, find that key, you know, without having to go through a life-changing accident, right? Maybe they can just, maybe this will help them listen for that key. Does that make sense? Yes, absolutely. This whole key analogy came to me last night. I'm really enjoying it. may not be, you know, but that's kind of the purpose, right? Is like, Hey, like search for that. Like, you know, not everybody has to be an entrepreneur.

or whatever the case is, but like we're all capable of doing great things. And whether it's like some creative work or some kind of art, like whatever it is, but if you're, sets your heart on fire, like go for it no matter what. And so that's just kind of the goal there with this brand. And then since I started it, I started at the beginning of 2020. It's been a heck of a journey then. So yeah, I'm like five years in business now.

That's amazing. And so you started this two years after your, after your, wreck, right? Yeah. Well, so I started working on it like with less than a year later, cause this was October, 2018. So by the time I got like, I was recovering like at home, you know, still like locked onto the bed pretty much, but you know, it was January. So, and then, so yeah, I worked on it. I started kind of formulating things a few months after that. And,

Speaker 1 (23:31.086)
just kind of working on the logo and just diving deep into like how, what I wanted to represent and then, you know, going, working on trademark stuff and all that, just kind of getting things set up. Cause I was like, I got this, you know, and then I officially launched things like, yeah, January, 2020. So, not even a year and a couple of months after the accident. Yeah. That's awesome. I love the logo by the way. Thank you. Yeah. Put a lot of, put a lot of thought into it. Uh, yeah. So it's got, it holds deep meaning to me.

Oh, explain or share with us. So you have the, uh, you know, the Ouroboros wolf, right? So typically there's an ancient symbol called Ouroboros and it's typically depicted by a serpent biting his tail or swallowing his tail. Yeah. And what it represents is it has a lot of different deep layers of meaning, but one of the main things is that it represents something infinite, something whole. And, but I'm also like,

I love wolves, but there's a very big spiritual connotation to like my obsession with wolves as well. And but what I love about the wolf is like it just continues the pursuit, right? Like they hunt down things that they eat, but they and they continue as a pack and they just are the best of what they do at hunting down there. And so I wanted to blend that together like and so now it represents like an infinite pursuit right like that.

Confidence, yeah.

Speaker 1 (24:57.014)
I like it. It's going, you know, like through life and eternally. yeah, that's what it represents is like that. It embodies all that together. And speaking about what you shared earlier, you know, with the, you matter attached to it there. Yeah. We, we didn't even know each other until somebody, was, Tina introduced us. Yeah. And I just, I found it just, she's amazing. She's sweetheart. She is. She really is. She's going to be on as well. Nice.

but to have you matter and then us, and we started a, you know, a podcast for you matter with the same concept, the same idea and not even knowing each other. That was really something. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, it was meant to be. Yeah. Yeah. I know. And it's cool. It's just a powerful message. And I think, you know, like I love the title of it. Like y'all's, y'all's podcast. Cause I think it's just, I don't know. It's just a message to anybody really like.

something I think everybody in their life at some point is needed to hear. And that's where it came from is that was something we wanted to hear. Yeah. Or I can definitely say for myself, it's like I was going through that time. was like, man, I just, I just want to know that I do matter. And so it's sort of like, you know, with you, you, you got inspired by people helping each other or helping you. And that's what inspired you. You wanted to know that people loved you.

people were there to take care of you. So you want to give that back and make other people feel the same way. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. And I love your podcast. So I definitely want people to check out your podcast because, uh, man, y'all, you will record for two, three, four hours, uh, just digging into people's stories. love that. Yeah, it's been, it's been crazy. Like the guy came in, I mean, it's funny because we were started at 10. I was like, we got two and a half hours. then, we talked for the first hour and I was like, all right, we got to start recording.

Because well, like, you know, I'm like, Hey, you know, get to know me. Like, I like to build that off of here, hear my story real quick. So you know who I am, and we'll just, it helps me get a feel for him. We just relax, you know, and then start rolling. And then next thing you know, it's like, my God, I got like, I got another podcast right here. And so that guess he's great. I'm so glad for that connect that, you know, relationship we're building because, you know, he's going to be coming back here in like a week or two, but that's great. But yeah, thank you so much. I love it. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (27:22.51)
Real quick on your back on your wreck. I'm just curious. So do you have a lot of hardware inside from the I got some screws in my right knee and then I got a metal rod through my left femur. OK. Yeah, that'll be there for good. I think it set off some airport detectors.

They're still there. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (27:44.387)
They always get like these weird like targets like in all that area down there and I'm like, listen.

You're like by on a hand coming through.

Yeah, just like I got metal my leg. I don't know what else to tell you My clip on my and I have a belt that has a plastic Clip on it. So that way I never said I never take my belt off So I'll use that when I travel but yeah, I don't know. Huh? Okay, but it's cool Yeah, I got this the graft. I got the graft on my aorta as well Gotcha. Yeah

Okay.

was going to say, with Relentless Pursuit, I know that what your goal is, but what are the individual things, what are some of the aspects of what you do to reach people and to do things for other people and to connect?

Speaker 1 (28:31.054)
So, you know, initially it was through apparel. You know, I had an understanding of apparel business. I was a part of a brand before. lot of connections throughout the fitness industry. And so like, kind of like catered to that kind of world first, because I knew people and I knew which route to go. I knew I had like just cool designs. And so I started off with like a team and we were like doing all the photo shoots. And that's a hard lesson in itself because I was it's weird because you got the ground, right? Well, I started off like here.

and was working my way up. So everybody's like, yeah, nice to meet you. I'm on an advance. got like eight people with me. Mike's so cool. The man, you know, and it's easy to like any that's, you know, I'm obviously over exaggerating, but you know, I wanted to kind of take it by storm, right? Be like, no, like dude, what, who the is this?

You're on that high too. You're do this.

Yeah. And I got these people with me, they're pumping me up. I'm like, dude, I'll cover your competitions. just, I'll give you free stuff. Like, yeah, we got this. Let's do those shoots. And so, and I was able to like, I've always been into writing. So I was able to deliver powerful messages through like my writing and with the photo shoots and stuff. So I'm growing this brand and going to events. And, I was in a relationship when I got my rec and you know, I was one foot out the door for awhile at certain points and

you know, but long story short, into 21 and a call on a wedding off, right? And this is after about a house and a new car and stuff. And it didn't have anything in my name. It just was like, Oh, I trust it. And, uh, and this isn't an, I'm not trying, there's no trying to knock this person or there's no ill will because like it's the end of the day. And I'll get to that is what it's led to. And so long story short, weren't the right people for each other. And like, I recognize like I wasn't the best person either. can't

Speaker 1 (30:22.798)
you know, say this person was terrible because I wasn't the best version of me either. And, um, but I lost all that stuff. mean, I lost, you know, a lot of money and all these things. And, know, right before that I had recorded like two episodes in like my garage because I had a, um, I had a detached garage built with a gym in it and everything. And so was a pretty cool layout. had the logo and a mural in the back. And so I had just had started that, but it's so then it was the apparel in the podcast, which is

hadn't really not started. then so that happened wedding called off. And then my whole world flipped upside down, you know, I lost my butt financially. And I was like, my god, and went through some kind of like, you know, my own way of therapy. Just like I love to go deep inwards. So I went out to the woods and did some work. I'm just gonna tell you all that. And that's just where I find peace and this where I can truly focus.

Get that. And so I went through that and that was just like this whole, that was just a whole nother low. I think that was like really hard for me in a whole different way. Cause I was like, dude, you know, you just, that's, that was totally different and moved to Murfreesboro, you know, turned to like alcohol and I always say it lightly with wine because I'm like, was drinking two bottles of wine a night. Like that's not alcoholism. No, it's still a lot of wine.

Yeah, I love wine. I don't have it much anymore, but I think that's my thing. But yeah, I was like going through wine like crazy, man. but that's just like, you know, I was coping in different ways because like, world flipped upside down. But fast forward to you know, that was October 21. And then fast forward to February, I went on a date. was like, beautiful girl, modest, you know, I like that, you know. So when I'll date and I don't know what it was.

guys, you know, I walked in, I saw her in the corner, I got nervous. I went to the bathroom and kind of splashed my face. I was like, what the hell's wrong with you, You my nice cowboy boots on. I'm like, you should be nervous. And I sat down with this woman and I just poured all out there. I opened up the book. I was like, this is who I am. This is what you would get. They just want to throw that out there and start. You know, and like I realized how crazy that is. Like we go, you know, we meet somebody and we feel like it's not our place to say our expectations or tell them everything.

Speaker 1 (32:46.296)
when in reality, if you see something with that person, the first thing you should do is put it all out there. You're like tackling new news two years down the road.

Right, you're like, I'm not 22, you know, I'm like, it's getting shorter.

Yeah, and I think

I think in my, but getting in my, you know, being in my early thirties, I was like, I'm tired of like the tiptoeing around, like I'm very forward. And she was like, Hey, I don't know anything about all that, but I'm all for it. And yeah, next day I was like, I'm going to be the best man I can be. This person gave me that purpose that she gave. She was like this new key I found to like unlock the best version of myself. And so my wife, Lydia, shout to you, you're the best one.

I mean, she's amazing. And yeah, and then so we, we meet and quickly things, you know, are basically just attached to the hip. I don't even know, like we're with each other every night. Just we couldn't stop being around each other. And she moved in pretty quick. She likes to say she it was like a month or two. lie now you were living with me like, like two weeks. There was like a toothbrush there already. And but you know, I was there for it. I was like, hey, you know, this is

Speaker 1 (34:01.856)
I know this feeling. This is unlike anything. And so as we're living together, you know, early on, it's like, Hey, listen, I can't be selling the shirts out of my guest bedroom. Like I got this neighbor, let's pursue. Like I need to live that. And long story short, I found the space a mile from my house. It was empty. And I was like, I need to put my back against the wall when I'm building and I need to like, I want to do something with that. And I had this vision to like, you know, bring businesses together and like work together to impact.

you know, the community. So I did move forward with it. So by June I was moved in with it built out. So June 22, I was moved in. With the build out and man, it was a whole new, it was rough. not only that,

In August I proposed

then a month after that, we found out she was pregnant. wow. So like I'm newly engaged, about to get married, about to have a baby. I got a business that the plan didn't follow through. So I'm like forking out all the overhead myself and my savings, everything's going and I'm like, my God. You know, so you add up five grand a month for a year just on you by yourself. I'm like, I gotta be quick. Yeah, I'm in this. I'm all in right now.

And so, but things shifted. started tackling the podcast. I was like, well, I want to get after this and bring it in guests. And, um, and I started bringing in more clients because we've got a gym in the back. You know, I was working with clients out of and fast 40, you know, two years in, I got a guy that now coaches people out of the back. He's got his own team of like other trainers and they work together to, know, on the fitness aspect. And then we got like these, the massage therapy guys here that do help with like recovery. And so it went from apparel to now like this whole

Speaker 1 (35:56.556)
different kind of embodiment of like a lot of different things. And while they're their own businesses, we're all working in correlation with one another. But to me, the most important thing from it all, like my favorite part of the journey has been this podcast because that has been since the beginning of moving in this building. I don't know. I launched my 127th episode this coming Sunday. So that's like an episode a week for that long.

Yeah. It's just been like roots I've been planning and networking with to build something greater that I really didn't even see. So it's evolved a lot. And with that has become a lot of relationships, a lot of connections, a lot of people that want to impact can open the doors for impact because there's so many people that do so many different things. And then also like hosting events here to where like we're raising money for a family in need or like gathering supplies here so we can go out to, you know, North Carolina and

help hurricane victims and volunteer time and stuff like that. So it's just like a several different layers of impact. If that makes sense. So it's hard to like really hone in because you think fitness lifestyle, all the different things. But to me, like the main, my main avenue where I've been most dedicated to is getting people's stories out there.

Yeah. And I think the most important thing that are the most prevalent thing, I guess we hear from different guests is just the word. Yes. Now you've said, yes, I see a need here and, or somebody needs a fundraiser. Somebody needs this lead a donation site. When you know what saying? You said yes to all those things. And I just having that willingness to want to do everything. and also, you know, from somebody who likes to weight lift and workout and all those things, it,

Those people are so therapeutic in their own way. think that I was telling somebody last night, I just need someone to yell at me and tell me I can do it. You know, I can go work out in my home gym, but I like to go somewhere and have somebody yell at me and tell me you can do it. It's just that having that positive environment. You know what saying? Like, like I love it. You know, it's,

Speaker 1 (38:03.054)
That's true, you know.

Speaker 2 (38:07.832)
Well, it's not funny, but I got hurt. What was it 10 years ago? It broke my shoulder and I had a doctor tell me, you'll never get full rotation. You're never going to, you know, they tell you everything you're not going to be able to do. don't tell me I can't do something. I'm as just, I've had a problem with that, you know, from childhood. So, but it was the first time I had ever been a gym.

I went to PT, did all that stuff and then they got me in the gym and I learned how to use all the machines. I was like, I'm a skinny musician. I didn't have to do any of that, but I loved it. But it took an accident for me to realize how much I love to lift weights and how much I love being in the gym. And it is such like a euphoria when you work out and no people don't believe you if they don't do it. But it is such a positive thing that you feel when you go and you work out. to me, think those six are.

All positive impacts.

No, and you're 100 % right. think, you know, I was talking about this on my last episode, like, he likes he lifts and stuff. But to me, it's like fitness is the foundation. If you think about it, if you're like, if you're because anybody can walk into gym, start lift the weights really in reality, like, yeah, memberships are cheap. Most places. If not, if you you know, I put the other programs for people that live remote that where like, they have two gallon jugs, you know, I can put together a whole week's protocol for them.

Because at the end of the day, you really only need something like that. But if you start doing it, well then one, you start to feel better. start to understand patience and all these different layers of that journey. And then that bleeds into the rest of your life. Now that discipline and that vision and that patience and all those different things you can apply to your career, whatever the case is or how you're building your money.

Speaker 1 (40:01.07)
Whatever it is, think it's just a beautiful foundation to get you started to go outward, right?

Right. I really do agree. I'm but yeah, it was funny. were just talking about that last night with a friend. Yeah, because I'm like, you know, you could just work out of the house and she's like, No, I need somebody to help me too.

Yeah, I mean, that's there are a of people like, yeah, I know a lot of people with home gyms. It's hard for them just to it's weird because when you go somewhere, it's like me working in my office, like I could work from my house some days, but like I'm so much more productive here in my space. Yeah. Yeah. You just need to do a new setting. I guess it's just like, want it. And to me, I want to separate the two of two. Like my home is just for me and my family.

Enough of it.

Speaker 2 (40:42.978)
decompress on the way home and then be present when you get there. You gotta decompress fast. You hurry it up, mister. Run the block a few times.

I live like a half a mile away.

Speaker 1 (40:54.825)
Yeah, I'm like, oh my god, you start for me like 11pm. So you know, anyways, hey, this is part of it.

It is, it is.

I want to go back to the rec again. And you had mentioned something that made me think about.

about, well, you had said that, you know, all these other people that you knew that were in the service or whatnot that had injuries that died from them. and you had multiple ones. Did you ever experience, sort of a, a survivor's guilt that you still survive through such terrible. yeah. So, honestly, yeah. And I think there's, so there's a kind of side that comes from a situation like that for me.

You know, it's not necessarily going spiraling downward and just like the depression aspect. For me, it's been like that combined with the as the like massive amount of pressure I put on myself because it's like there's so many people that aren't blessed with opportunity for another chance and like I shouldn't have been and now I got the opportunity to like I found my purpose. I got this opportunity to like charge forward in life.

Speaker 1 (42:12.118)
So it's like if any day I sell myself short, I'm like, you know, I'm basically got my, you know, just I'm not doing it just, I'm not living up to it. Like I'm failing, you know, it's like easy to get in your head because you're like, I have so much gratitude for having the opportunity to live that if I.

It got to the point to where if I take a break, like Joe, you're screwing up, like you're going to fail. You know, and I got so geared on this, my idea of success that I never was able to truly, truly able to recognize, any successes. It's like we have an event, the key line pocket because it's key on positive favorite thing, you know, and so that's what my event. What's that? Yeah. Good key line pie. Y'all have to get there this year. Like I'm going to start spinning it up here for a May, but

that was like the one we raised money for. And I was like, dude, I wanna make a event around Keelan Paz, my favorite thing. And honestly, it did really well. But it's like we get there and this thing happens and I put so much pressure on myself for it to succeed. And I'm like, ah, but I wanted to do well and make a good impression for it to continue. And then it happens and I'm pumped for a little bit. And then next day I'm like, boom. I never just like sit there recognize. And I got this.

And there's another so there's a slogan I put on my some of my peril. And I use a lot of hunt eat repeat. It's kind of that wolf right? Kind of like the logo. So you hunt down the goal. You eat, you gain that nutrition, you get your sustenance, you know, you do what you need to do for yourself in order to keep moving forward and then you repeat that cycle right. And that's what the idea has been. But what I realized is that it's for me, it's almost been like I've been like this werewolf in bloodlust, you know, like

I wasn't there was the goal. There was the prey, but I just ran to it and just like killed it and then I just keep moving forward. I never took the time to take a bite. Does that make sense? And that's like, that's how I like to paint that picture because like, and that's what had been going on for a while to the point it put me in the hospital last year because my blood pressure was so high because the pressure I put on myself because I am blessed enough to live that if I don't

Speaker 1 (44:27.726)
If I take a break, am screwing myself, I'm screwing my family, I'm not living up to the standard. And it's been a really harsh realization because I end up in the hospital because my nose is gushing blood and I have to fill up a diaper, that's all that's available. And then I'm like, my vision's blurry. a couple of days later, I drive myself to the hospital and I'm like, yeah, you need to be on blood pressure meds. And yeah, you got a graft on your aorta. That is not a good combination.

Right, do not do that.

And then I'm like, holy shit, my wife says like, Joe, I'm never going to be one to like, you know, tell you what to do because she knows how I am. She's like, but I don't know what we do without you. And that was a moment that was very important for me because that's when things shifted here. And that's when I really started to focus on.

the mental aspect.

Yeah, the mental health is just as important as the physical.

Speaker 1 (45:22.118)
Yeah, and I'm big on that. I'm like mentality like drive wise are great. like, you, I don't want to you can get so honed in on a pursuit or whatever it is that you can push yourself to death. And like, I don't want to do that. I'm like, no, screw that. So like, how do I read your things up here? How do I forgive people that have burned me? How do I like forgive myself for allowing that space to be occupied here?

We understand that.

Speaker 1 (45:51.896)
How do I readjust? And I got a mentor and it actually was a guest on my podcast and I got a mentor and like just so many different things. And when you're intentional about that, could still, you can actually, what I found is I'm working way more efficiently and getting a lot more done and being way more proactive, but with less bog down here and I feel better. this is all happened in the matter of the last several months, you know? So like I'm at this crazy turning point, my journey.

And so yeah, I think it goes along with what you said. The question you asked me and I drug it out quite a bit. I love that. Yeah, I just I get fired up. I'm a very passionate person. I just like, ah, but when you voice that, yeah, I mean, that's kind of like that has a lot to do with that. I think that guilt for sure. So.

Now I know you guys have done like different kind of drives and things and you had mentioned going and helping over in the Carolinas and East Tennessee. What have you guys been doing this year? I know you've made multiple trips over there, but what kind of things are you guys bringing and what are you seeing over in that area still?

So it's been difficult. I've had to take a break. I'm just at a very like crucial point in my business to where I have to focus on it. I know where to be able to do the things. So I made like six trips out there in a row and one that's texting on my own family. My wife was just like, Joe, get it. I know your heart, like you take on it like almost on that identity. Yeah. Because you become and that stems from a whole different thing I can get into.

Right.

Speaker 1 (47:25.612)
I wrote about recently about not being good enough because like nothing is good enough. And so I think I'd come back from these trips and I'm like, well, I didn't do enough. I got to go back and I just get obsessed and kind of falling back into that cycle of like that pressure when in reality, like we've already done. You know, it might be a drop in the bucket, but it's our drop in the bucket, right? You know, and.

But shifting forward, unfortunately, people forget about things, you know, and so like there's a lot of traction out the gates, getting a lot of donations. I mean, I pulled a couple big old trailers full of stuff and then it got to where, you know, I'm loading up my truck bed and then I built a relationship with a group out there that's in Spruce Pine and like going out there, volunteering time, helping them build like yurts and get people set up with heat and do things like that.

And not to knock anybody. know everybody's probably is different, but it kind of got to a point to where I was like kind of alone doing it. And it was just, wasn't able to bring the funds in. And then I'm like, dude, it's taking a hit on my wallet. can't, I just can't afford it. And at the end of the day, my responsibility is my family. That's right. But I'm like, there's also that guilt of being like, I get to come home to, that though. Right. A lot of these people have lost it all. And it's hard to really put into words when you're

the pictures and you see the pictures like, my God, but when you're there and like talking to people and you feel it, it's like, it comes back with you. And you're like, how the hell is everybody having living like a normal life? And it's no one's fault. Like do that.

It's just so much devastation. don't think people realize that it's still devastating. You you see clips and stuff on the news and I'm like, this should still be on the news every day, you know, but we're not really seeing it. So.

Speaker 1 (49:10.838)
Yeah, it's in. go ahead.

No, I was going to say we had a lot of friends, lot of organizations here, you know, brought a lot of stuff out initially, but, know, it's kind of the same thing. It's like at some point, you know, you can't keep making trips out there forever, but I know they're, still in our hearts and our minds.

There's a lot of need and I'm glad you brought this up because you know, I'm trying to get out there soon so I can, I wanted to do my Keyline Pie Fest for this group out there, try to get the founder like and his wife to come be on the podcast or like I bring my equipment, record with them and then raise money for them. I think that'd be really cool. It sucks because they are going through so much and it's going to be a couple of years before they rebuild and don't get me wrong.

It would be great.

Speaker 1 (49:58.766)
There's of course the fires were bad and like I feel for those everybody in California that's been affected by that. But it's like as soon as that happens, it's like North Carolina just, I don't know the mountains have not got the intention they deserve. And, but then mains and it wasn't mainstream news really. And bet they put all this attention into the fires. And it's just like, dude, like that matters, but so does this. And I'm getting notifications from PayPal to donate.

I agree.

Speaker 1 (50:28.322)
Like not even someone specific PayPal saying donate to the fires. I didn't see that once about the hurricane, the flood victims and it pisses me off.

No, no, we're in the same boat and it's, you're like, this is the mountains where, you know, it's zero degrees here. You know, it's an extra 15 degrees colder there. I mean, they are really rough in a winter, like a deadly winter there. You know, I'm like, they have like 60, 70 degree weather in a lot of most of the places in California. I mean, not to put it down. mean, I mean, it's, I mean, I know everybody.

is hurting right now. just don't want I don't want anyone forgotten. I want everyone taken care of.

Yeah.

That's the part that sucks is like, you know, you couldn't blame if they do feel forgotten Yeah, know and so but there's amazing people out there doing their part You know I will say like there's I met some guys that like part of that are part of that crew that like Literally quit their jobs and move there taking everything they got where they have and they move there and they live there like at that that spot that little base and they're just Committed to that that's your life and like there's amazing people a part of it and I think to me Like one person doing that. I mean, that's that's insane

Speaker 1 (51:39.63)
So I love to see it. Yeah. Exactly. Like they felt the call and they had the capability to do that. You know, had I not say I wasn't, you know, rewind a few years ago before I met my wife. I mean, who knows? I would have been like, all right, peace. But, know, like I got my responsibilities too and I got to be here for them. And so wanting to be more proactive, wanting to get out there here soon in the next month and just help out where I can and interview them and.

That was their defining moment.

Speaker 1 (52:08.152)
just keep talking about it.

Well, let us know when you're gearing up those Ceylon pies.

LBS, please. it's fun. We have vendors bounce house. We had to do like a kitchen and stuff like people make pies and yeah, it's good. And we're setting it up this year because I got a lot of people a lot of attention through that one. So yeah, we all come along. absolutely. Well, before we wrap up, I am curious. You've experienced a lot and I would say a lot in a short amount of time.

That's crazy.

Speaker 2 (52:30.272)
do it.

Speaker 1 (52:43.258)
And from the drugs, overcoming that or the addiction and then to the wreck and then to the relationship. so much that you've So, yeah. So based on what you have gone through, do you have any helpful information or tips that you've used to help you continue to stay on track?

Serving in the military.

Speaker 1 (53:10.894)
So like if somebody's listening and they're going through that rough time in their life Do you have anything that? Piece of advice that you would share with them So I did an analogy. It's great. You said brought this up And the first part of this this acronym is very is the most important so I had a public speaking event a couple months ago in TSU and I I Delivered this acronym that came up with that. It's like

really just recently realized was such a, has been a part of my journey. And to me, the most important thing, I think, to really kind of shift things, especially in your dark place, is this acronym is GRIT. So it just kind of fit like the aesthetic and stuff. I'm like, I'm go GRIT, you know, people are anyways, no, but GRIT. And so G's for gratitude.

And I think that's such an important thing because, hey, she snores so loud. It's okay. I just don't want people thinking I'm like gross on here. We can't hear it actually. Those that are listening, he has a pup. Yeah, she's a snore. She's gratitude. Okay, so finding gratitude in everything. And it's not just like, yeah, there's the obvious.

you

Speaker 1 (54:37.342)
sunny day, there's the waking up. That's cool. Like be grateful for those things. But honestly, the most important when you truly unlock gratitude is when you can find it in any situation in your life. I've been through some crap and and I won't even go into the you know, a lot of the other journey but you know, okay, my accident. Yeah, I could have looked at his negative but I found so much gratitude.

for that very moment I got hit and I was laying in that field. I found gratitude for losing my house and losing stuff financially because dude, that's stuff that will come. And it led me to my wife and daughter, which is the biggest victory I've ever achieved. You know, I'm grateful for like the struggle has been to get my business to today and it's still not easy. But guess what? The person I am today, as opposed to just a few years ago is someone like the thing, the lessons I've learned there, nothing can pay for that.

It's just, got to go through it. And so that leads into resilience, adversity, you know, that's what strengthens you. And so I think that's the second part of it. So GR resilience, so strength through adversity pretty much. Because being willing to face adversity is only going to help you grow. And then the next part is intention. So purposeful actions. So whatever you do.

be intentional towards that. And I have purpose behind it. And then T for transformation. And then that is just embracing the journey and finding growth throughout the journey. And that's great. And so I do. Thank you.

love that. And I think, know, funny enough that gratitude is the first and I think it's probably the most important in my in my mind. you don't find the positivity in your situations, then the mindset for everything else is missed. It's gone. Like you can't, if you're not striving in that positive, you're not moving forward.

Speaker 1 (56:39.15)
Yeah, I mean, honestly, I know people have experienced worse than I have. I know a guy like I told you about him. I got to give shout out to my client and friend Rick and mentor. But he was on a podcast, know, and like his, you know, 11 years ago, his son was murdered. And but Rick can tell you today the purpose he's found in that and the gratitude he's found in that. And if that man can find gratitude and purpose in something like that.

something I couldn't, I can't even begin to imagine. And I have a child that is such a powerful testimony because like, holy crap, it's possible wherever we look, we just got to find it and use it. and so, most of us want to face things like that. and I think, you know, part of his journey is like, he's looked at it as like he had to, and you get what I'm saying, but, and it's extremely unfortunate, but you get, that's just the things you think about. So

I mean to say that is because we can find it anywhere. And as soon as we can find that gratitude, can give us purpose. can give us hope. And then we can start moving forward throughout our lives.
